Rogues Gallery (Spring 2018)
After reading the short stories of "Superman: Secret Origin" comic book for class I fell in love with the graphics, and story line. I thought this would be a perfect story to explain the beginning of Superman's and Lex Luthor's relationship. I wanted to focus on the few pages that Superman and Lex Luthor meet each other at the Smallville market. It is a very important part because they have a connection with each other and Lex Luthor shows Superman his "Kryptonite". This first meeting eventually is recalled by Lex Luthor many years later and is a significant interaction to the characters relationship between each other. Lex Luthor is one of the most important Villain relationships to Superman and the stories are created between the two. Without the evil ways of Lex Luthor there would not be a lot of saving for Superman to do.

For the Superman digital gallery project, I chose an image from the comic book titled, “The Death of Superman.” This comic book was written by Dan Jurgens and published in 1993. The image in particular that I chose was near the end of the comic book. It depicts Doomsday and Superman punching each other, with blood flying out of Superman’s mouth (Jurgens). I chose this artifact because I felt it was an important image within both Superman and the superhero genre as a whole. In the image, Superman appeared to be very vulnerable to me and I felt that this was not a common occurrence for his character.

The artifact I have chosen is an excerpt from the novel, The Last Days of Krypton, by Kevin J. Anderson. It goes for several pages, and I did my best to choose a short enough segment that would be easily transcribed into a file. In it, we see the last days of Krypton, hence the title. In it, the El family, Jor-El and Zor-El, learn that their planet is going to be destroyed. How is a mystery that they save for later, but when the capital city of Argo city is taken hostage by Brainiac, Zod uses that chance to take control of the government, unaware that the planet is about to be destroyed. I chose the section that I did to try and give as much context as possible about why Zod did what he did, and why he ended up taking the name General Zod, which is where I end the excerpt.

This cover features the first time Brainiac is introduced in Action Comics #242, The Super-Duel in Space, published in 1958. Aptly nicknamed "The Collector of Worlds" Brainiac’s introduction opens with him using his hyper-ray to steal cities of Earth. Brainiac is one of the most important villains in Superman’s rogue’s gallery. His intelligence and power make him a formidable foe for both Superman and The Justice League.

For the Superman Digital Gallery Project, I had to pick out something related to one of Superman's villains. I chose Bizarro because he is this weird inversion or perversion, depending on the writer, of Superman and what he stands for. Some writers write him as a mindless monster, while others write him as Superman's fan who wants to be a hero just like him but gets things turned around a lot but still having his heart in the right place. He is a character that can have many different interpretations. I went with the image above of Bizarro from issue #20 of the Superman/Batman comic series that ran during the 00's. I chose it because it really shows Bizarro's character in a nutshell - he's a backwards Superman.
