Wechsler's Intelligence Scale for Children Material Kit

WISC Manual and Kit WISC Manual and Kit WISC Manual and Kit WISC Manual and Kit

This suitcase contains the WISC Manual: Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, by David Wechsler, as well as the necessary materials for engaging in Children's Intelligence Testing.

The WISC test may be administered on any child “as young as five years of age” (Wechsler, 1949, p. 1). The Wechsler test was unique in that it completely renounced the “concept of the mental age as a basic measure of intelligence” (Wechsler, 1949, p. 2), which had been used as an “ultimate basis for appraising intellectual capacity” (Wechsler, 1949, p. 2).

The WISC contains three different sections: Verbal IQ (VIQ), Performance IQ (PIQ) and Full Scale IQ (FSIQ).

The Verbal IQ section has six tests. They included: Information, Similarities, Arithmetic, Vocabulary, Comprehension and Digit Span.

The Performance IQ section has seven tests. They included: Picture Completion, Coding, Picture Arrangement, Block Design, Object Assembly, Symbol Search and Mazes.

After completion of these tests, the Full Scale IQ, or a chart available with possible rankings, based on the scores of the individual tests.

The WISC ultimately works by “comparing each subject’s test performance not with a composite age group but exclusively with the scores earned by individuals in a single, his or her own, age group” (Wechsler, 1949, p. 3).
