Description | The shipwreck of the ANTHONY WAYNE has the distinction of being the only shipwreck in Ohio to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.. It was built on the banks of the Maumee River in Perrysburg (then spelled Perrysburgh) in 1837. The ship went through several accidents and rebuilds over the years and passed through the hands of a number of owners. On April 28, 1850, the WAYNE sank approximately eight miles off Vermilion, Ohio, when its boiler exploded. While the hull sank, the upper deck stayed afloat until the next day when a passing schooner was able to render assistance. Twenty-two of the eighty-four people aboard were lost. The site of the wreck remained undiscovered until 2007, at which point it was surveyed and then nominated for addition to the National Register. |
