Description | The GRIFFITH was built in Maumee in 1847, fairly close to where the Wayne had been built. On June 17, 1850, the GRIFFITH was making a short trip from Fairport, Ohio, to Cleveland. During the night, the ship caught fire while off what is now Mentor. The captain ordered a turn towards shore to beach the boat and allow everyone to escape, but the GRIFFITH ran up on a sandbar about half a mile from shore. Many of the passengers drowned and were buried in a mass grave on the beach. The burning of the G.P. GRIFFITH remains one of the worst maritime disasters on the Great Lakes. |
