Dear Old Son-
Everything has been so quiet here for a few days, there has been nothing to write about. The house is still a mess but the plasterers promise to be through tomorrow night, so I have arranged for a cleaning woman to come in Saturday morning and clean up after them. You know how I dislike [underlined] havivng a mess around, well this job has been a nightmare to me and I sure will be happy when it is all over with. Imagine, not a speck of hot water for 10 days - I shave at the office, but gosh, I need a bath now and the - soon, I'll smeel like olf "Cy Capell".
I am enclosing a little clipping I cut out of the Sentinel - it shows they still think of you down at Wooster. I put one just like it in your scrap book. This has been a week of examinations, so no basket ball. The univ leaves Friday to play Muskingum, then on to Athens to play Ohio Univ Saturday night.
The High school go to Findlay Friday. Did I tell you that Shirley is a part time ticket seller at the Lyric? I told her she was following in your foot steps working at the picture show. Do you remember that Seagle boy that stuttered so much? You used to slip him in to the old Lyric now and then until he ate the peanuts and threw
shucks all over the floor for you to sweep out.
He is a hired man on a farm and came in to have a tooth extracted. He still stutters and asked all about you and said you were a good man. I told him you expected him to get into the marines soon and you were going to have him transferred to your out fit. He said "Gosh I bet he would make me step around a plenty".
[centered] Friday am [end centered]
Just got a swell long letter from Sally - at the end she says "and Pop, write real soon".
It sort of flatters me, I guess she likes to get my letters. She sure is old Pops swell little daughter. She is worried about sending you 40 or 50 bucks, says she cant tell the first of the month because she put all the allotment into war bonds. Any way she says you say you arent getting your mail and she hesitates to send you a money order for fear you wont get it in time, or maybe be moved out and never get it etc.
I can send you some money Dick if you still need it when you get this letter. Why are you short?
Got a letter from mom this morning, I think she is getting a bit anxious to get home. Mary is much better
2 [centered]
although she has a bad day [cut-off by hole punch] now and then.
Mom said Bill heard that day, which was last Sunday the 24th, that his promotion was actually on the way,so he may have it by this time. You sort of beat him to the "draw" again. Mom wrote that she had written Sally at Wooster. Sally says her truck just came thru from San Diego to Ensworth [unsure sp], so she is going home this week end to unpack. She says Bee Mose are so fine to her, took her to Cleveland to a show and to eat last Saturday.
Beautiful day here today but quite chilly - I had one of those wakeful nights last night, couldn't sleep for thinking about all the things I wanted to do, or rather had to do, in the kitchen after plasterer left. I am going to get a fancy plate Glass shelf to put up over the sink instead of that board [underlined] one. Then after the windows and woodwork and floors are all scrubbed clean, I will put all the shades and curtains back up, then move the kitchen furniture back in etc. It sure is going to look pretty swell and will mom only throw a fit when she first lays eyes on it, eh?
Mrs Harrington [cut-off by hole punch] phoned yesterday and wanted your address for something - I gave it to her, and she said "you mean Pearl Harbor", I said No! I dont [underlined] know [underlined] where he is, because he has never [underlined[ said, all I know is his address. Well she said "I know where he is because Bill (Compton) wrote that he had been with you out on some pineapple plantation and I know Bill is in Pearl Harbor". I said "Still Mrs H., I dont know where Dick is, for publication, because he [underlined x2] hasn't told us and can't tell us". How was that for military secrecy?
[unsure br] Sally said you should send back that write up about her in the Wooster Daily Record, for our scrap book, Dont forget, buddy.
Fred Uhlerman is at Corpus Christy, Texas. Bill says Jack Gates is married and up in Wisconsin some where.
That post card you signed, addressed to us, when you left San Francisco, to be delivered when you should reach your destination, was delivered to us last [underlined] week [underlined], dated Jan 18th Washington D.C. They sure took plenty of time letting us know you had arrived.
Well Dicky Boy, I will close now and get this on the way. Mailing a letter to Sally too. Be [underlined] Pops [underlined] good [underlined] boy [underlined] - I pray for you many times a day and a special one at night up in "our mens Room". Best of Luck
