Dear Old Son-
Your letter written Monday night Jan 11th, came to me Monday morning Jan 18th. When you receive this letter and answer it, do this - if you are at Pearl Harbor sign your name "Your Son, Richard". Can you do that? I wont quote you or anything - this is our answer to any one asking if we know where you are - "He left San Francisco Nov 5th, we think his firs stop was Pearl Harbor, his mail comes thru in about the same time as always, other wise we dont know and Dick has never said, of course". Do you think Hot Pilot will bring his son up to be a Sissy? Not with me around, he wont. I'll "comb" him if he dont mind. Watch me!
I never heard of an Al Gernert, But, I'll say this, "If he was [underlined x2] the smartest comunication man in the whole marine force, as your informant said, then he must [underlined x3] be relation". Eh! fellow?
Some [underlined] detailed drawing of your room in your last letter but you left out one thing - an ash tray, Ha Ha!
Is his room in a barracks or where? How large is it, 12x12? And dont [underlined x3] sit on your bunk and Think [underlined x2]. I [underlined] dont [underlined], you told me not to.
Say, the lone remaining kitten died. Found him dead Sunday morning. Tough.
About the weather here - Monday it rained a bit, then turned to sleet, then [cut-off by hole punch] to snow and today it is just a blizzard and cold as "billyhell". Lots of snow drifts, too. I come off our front porch then off thru Gillespie's drive way to avoid a big snow bank. Along the curb in front of my office the snow is 3 or 4 foo high where he walks have been cleaned plus a little drifting. Gosh what a winter. And old mom, God Bless her, is down south where it is warm - what a break and I am so darned glad for her, too.
Do you sleep with your Radio on? You didn't get that from me - sounds more like a Wooster habi.
Paul Landis just dropped in, on his way from Columbus to Sylvania to speak tonite. He brought a letter to me. One you had written to Ruth + Eddie Gray,
He said he and the Grays had spent hour solving or trying to solve your statement "that, when spring time rolls around it will be closer for me to go home by continuing my westward trek than it would be for me to go back the way I came".
I can't figure that out either unless you are going to Africa or in that area. The Solomons wont work it out.
The college beat Ada last night 49-27. Ohio Northern tryed a stalling game but it didn't work. High school plays Napoleon tonight if they can get here.
2- [centered]
Shirley + I will eat out tonight because we have moved [underlined x2 start] everything [underlined end] out of the kitchen + breakfas room so te man can plaster tomorrow and the next two days.
The old kitchen sure will look different wont it? Wont mom be pop eyed when she comes home to that surprise? We aren't telling her a thing about it either.
Remembe that Roy Smith, class mate of Bills, that stayed all night at our home on his way back to West Point last year? He was married Jan 11th to Joan Winklemeyer of Peoria, Ill., the sister off Bob Winklemeyer also a class mate of Bills. Remember how quick he was? Roy Smith, I mean. He is flying tose fast P 38's out in Chandler Arizona. Jack [unsure sp] Gates is up in Wisconsin. Had a letter from Boles today, in answer to my card. He said he knew he should have gone south this winter but didn't know why [underlined x2] till he got my card telling him "mom" was in Texas. But he said I shouldn't get nervous because his A card wouldnt let him go that far. He said te B.B. team wasn't as good as they had hoped it would be.
I enclose your insurance receipt so you may know I paid it, out of the 60.00 money order.
Well it is 5:30 p.m., guess I better call Shirley to come up to eat. Awful cold out. Will write some more in the morning,
How do you like my rambling type of letters? Whatever did you do with all your Quinine? Are you taking your Viamin? Maybe you better put some of those quinines in the "change" compartment of your money belt, so as to have some handy, if you should go south [underlined x2] west. So Long now, son-o-mine,
[centered] Wed a.m. [end centered]
Well it was 5 below zero when I came to the office at 9:30 this morning. I guess it was 10 or 15 below earlier. How does that sound to you?
High school lost to Napoleon last night 43-39 - unlucky shooting.
Wooster beat Hiram [unsure sp] 69-29, clipping enclosed.
[unsure br] Had a lng letter from mom this morning - she says Bill wants a baby with a "propeller" on him. Mary wants to know if I could crowd another young man in our "Mens Dorm" at home. Mary is much better and mom is thinking [underlined] of coming home, but doesn't set any time.
Must close now and go home to look after the furnace. What a winter! So Long old Pal - write all you can about your doings - I love your letters. Again I say, you are a grand [underlined] boy to write so many letters to our group.
Best wishes to you and
