Dear Son + Pal-
I knew what would take place- Dr Prout received your letter and the first I knew of it- he stuck it in one of his envelopes and mailed it to me. I phoned to thank him and he just raved about your letter to him. He said it was one of the finest [double underlined] letters he ever [double underlined] received. And to think, he said, "with all his work, he took time to write me a letter- and such a well written, well worded letter!" He insisted I should forward it to Mom at Fort Worth. I knew he would appreciate a letter from you and you never can tell what might come of it, in latter days, when you are back in civil life. Bill Rothe just [double underlined] left the office- he is leaving for Columbus at 3:40 P.M., he confessed he hoped to enjoy a bit of New Years Eve festivities with his Sue. He is a good boy and I think he likes me. When he graduates he will automatically go into the Service- he wants to get in the Navy in the hopes he can transfer to the Marines. I told him you had received his long letter and he was relieved and agreet to put your name back on his list of acquaintances. Polly Bates is engaged- clipping enclosed- she told that her fiancee was in dental school to keep from going to war. Fine going!
Lt. Jim Hu [word blocked by hole punch] ter's old girl, [word blocked by hole punch] mogene Jobe, is married- clipping enclosed. It is alright with me. Got a check from Old Bill Hot Pilot today, for 50.00. Hope mom earns her money, dont you. Sue Frowine is in Fort Worth, working for the State Biological Labratory- she is engaged to an Ensign in the Navy. I told mom to phone her. Our crowd is gathering at Conklins for New Years Eve. We were to have them, then mom got this rush order job down south- I still told them to come but they decided it would be an imposition on me. Dont worry- [double underlined] I will [end double underlined] maintain my military bearing. Know your capacity and stay within it. Where have you heard that before? Shirley has no plans for tonight, yet. I told her to get the girls down to our house. You should see those little kittens now. They became tame almost over night. One gets up in one of our big chairs and when the other tries to climb up, the first one swats him or kicks him in the face- then they wrestle, till one gets mad + quits- soon they are at it again. Shirley + I just sit and laugh at them. She gets such a kick out of them, but of course, I do most of the care of them. Our dining room is still a mess, but tomorrow Shirley + I will carry the tree out and "rid" the place up. Is it "Rid" or "Red"? Or dont Marines know those things?

LT. Jimmy Maurer is in Curacoa, an Island of the North Coast of South America and Lt. Jim Curry, flier, is now stationed at the same place- so it said in the Sentinel Tribune last night.

Happy new year, old Pal-
Well I'll bring you up to date on New Years Eve- our crowd gathered at Conklins and had a real good time- about 1:30 am. our time, the phone rang and there was Old Hot Pilot calling- we talked to Bill, Mary Mom- Guess Bill will pay thru the nose for that call, because everyone of our crowd had to say "hello", at least. I was home in bed at 2:00 am. Shirley had a date with Bob Uhlman to go to the midnight show and they went down to Fosters afterward- she was home at 3:15 am. New Years day I "stuffed" a chicken and put it on to roast- Ruth Cross a friend of Shirleys visiting here, at with us- then I listened to all the Bowl games and at 7:30 went to Bud Galliers charity game- BG VS Scott High School. BG won 56-24, then home and to bed. Got a special delivery letter from Mom in the afternoon. Bill is so [double underlined] happy that mom is with them. He goes to the Field at 5:30 every morning and flies every other day! The Doctor said Mary
must stay in bed a few days, now that they have a "Maid". Mom is so darned happy to be with them and help out. I told her I hoped you didn't get anybody pregnant where you are and send for her. Tell me all you did over the week end and everything. At the game last night there sat, in a row, Mr Uhlman, Fred, Bob, Candy and Mrs Uhlman. Wasn't that pretty fine? Gosh how I envied them- all being together. Fred leaves today for New Orleans for duty. A good man. Shirley + I are getting along dandy, she sure is a Pal- but how we do miss your mother. Mom says Bill insists [underlined] that Mary "shows" her pregnancy- The darned mullet-head, who does he think he is, Eh? Well, sonny boy, 1943 is with us and we will make the best of everythng, wont we? I'll close this and get it on the way, wishing you all the luck + success for this year and we'll plan on being together before the year is over. Bushels of love to one of the grandest sons a man ever had.
[right] Your Loving Pop. [end right]
P.S. Have you been able to see Whitehead or Mankart yet? They room together, somewhere. Pop | |
