(#11) [centered] [top right] Thursday Dec 17-42 [end top right]
Dear Son-o-mine-
It is now 2:00 p.m. on the above date and a "rageing" snow storm is going on outside - it has been snowing awful hard for 4 hours - snow is 7 or 8 inches deep - mind you, the snow (4 inches) which fell the night of Nov 28th (20 days ago) is still on the ground and this blizzard today is just adding to it. Old timers can't remember when we ever had a snow, so early in the season, that stayed this long - and it sure is tough on your old Pop - just shovelling [underlined] all the time - shovel coal, then snow, then coal, coal, coal, then more snow. You can be thankful (?) you are where it is warm, sunny + balmy,
Sent you a present in an air mail letter today - not much, just something I thought you might use somewhere, sometime.
Also expressed [underlined] to Sally this morning your present, that luscious bealutiful robe - boy is it only beautiful, also a 5.00 [unsure sp] sweater mom + I bought her and a present Bill + Mary sent to us for her - also mom is making a beautiful rug for her made out of canvas and bunches of cut string - it is the present rage in rugs and is a dandy - you will enjoy getting out of bed and putting your feet on it, someday. Also, Shirley has to buy a present for Sally, which she hasnt had time to do. Your [underlined] wife [underlined] wont
forget this Xmas - since we cant do anything [illegible] you, we [illegible] look out for Sally.
[unsure br] Remember those Vitamin tablets and Quinine is a present from me - I hope to high heaven you get them. Be sure and let me know when you do. If the Postmaster opens the box he might confiscate that 496 grams of Quinine for the Government, then they will come back on me and say "Where did you get all that Quinine"? I'll tell them buried in the garden.
Wooster won from John Carroll last night - I am enclosing a bunch of clippings I think you will enjoy, let me know if you do.
This is letter #11, altho I think I forgot to number some of them.
Flash! Mom just phoned that Jane Mercer Thomas had gone to the Hospital to have her baby. Will let you know all about results later.
BGU plays Wayne Univ. tonight, it should be good - if we can get there thru the snow.
High school plays Fostoria there tomorrow night.
-2- [centered] [top right] Friday p.m. 18th [end top right]
Jane Mercer Thomas has a 6 lb baby girl - Catherine Ann. Everybody OK, Orla came thru in good shape, too.
BGU defeated Wayne Univ., 65-41 last night - nothing to the game after the first quarter.
Had a card from Mary this morning, written Tuesday - they are in Fort Worth but hadn't found an apartment yet.
We now havve 8 to 10 inches of snow on the ground and the weather report says "colder".
Had a card from "Ruby" today - his address is Pvt. Raymond H. Rubrake
[centered] Co E, 8th Q.M. Tr'n'g. [unsure sp] Regt.
2nd Platoon, Camp Lee, Va. [end centered]
He says "if the patience of the non-coms [unsure sp] holds out, they may make a soldier out of me yet."
Mom is busy working on Sally's rug and making pajama's for Shirley.
Do you ever hear from Old Pudge? Is he still north west of you? I sort of read between the lines of your last letter that you might be "moved on" around the 1st of the year. If so, do your stuff, God be with you, but dont be reckless, old Pal.
I wrote Bob Lowell a letter today and sent him a reciept for $150.00 [unsure sp] from the High School Fund.
[unsure leg] is awfully quick just before Xmas.
[written along righthand side, "(you can carry Bills picture [illegible] your purse)"]
[centered] Saturday am [end centered]
"5" above zero here this morning and 10 to 12 inches of snow.
High school beat Fostoria 44-21 last night at Fostoria. I didnt go too slippery + cold. Shirley went.
Wooster has been accepted as a navy training school - 200 will come Jan 7th, then every 2 weeks 200 more till 600 are there. "Mose" will have his hands full trying to teach the Navy boys how to "weigh anchors" wont he?
Say, Pal, as soon as xmas mailing is over I will send you Sally's picture that you want - is that all right?
The mails are just swamped with all sorts of mail and the post office dept from the top, down, are short handed.
Today is Herb Bowmans birthday, so the Woughs [unsure sp] + The Gernerts are picking them up and taking them down to the "Chinks" for supper. It will be the first time I have been in Toledo for months.
So I will close this letter and get it on the way - it being newscast #11.
Carry on old Pal, where you are, and I'll look after things here till you come home. The Gernert motto "Look after each others and do a good deed for someone else". Eh! Son?
Tell me all you can about your life and Ill keep you posted about things here. Best of Luck Sweet man.
[bottom right] I love you so much.
