[top right] Tuesday Dec 8th [end top right]
Dearest Son-
Well, we took Sally to North Baltimore and put her on the B+O at 4:16 p.m. last Saturday - while waiting for the train, mom, Sally + I walked up to a drug store to buy Sally some magazines and window shopping on the way back, Sally spied a set of dishes in a window just like the ones you + Sally had in your home, So! Mom wanted them for her xmas present - we bought them (of course) took them home, washed them and ate our supper off them Saturday night. Now [underlined] we have a set of dishes (32) just like you + Sally. How is that?
[unsure br] Sunday mom and Shirley went to church and sang in the choir while I went to the office and worked.
[unsure br] Sunday evening Lieut. Mustain and wife came over - we had a couple of high balls and a lunch. They are both fine and all Bob asks is, that time to come where you + Bill + he can set down at our house, with your wives, and argue about the good old days.
Bobs address is
Lieut R.W. Mustain
Co D. 23rd Q.M. Truck Regiment
Camp Chaffee
Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Last night (Monday) went out to the univ. to see the game with Camp Perry.
[unsure br] BGU won 73-22, but of course they had no opposition. "Andy" has one fellow by name of Wyndol Gray of Akron South who is a natural [underlined], outisde of that, just some good ball players. When I was coming out of the Gym, Stevive, the policeman stopped me and said "Gosh, Dicks outfit would have beat BGU as bad as BGU beat Camp Perry". However, they really have some good material and once they get to playing together will make a great showing, but so far it is all this Wyndol Gray - a really good boy.
Say, old Pal, Sally says you insist on not having any xmas presents sent to you - so you will have to consider that package of Vitamins + Quinine as our present. Not a great deal we could get you any way, but be sure and let me know if and when you receive that box, also tell me if it has been opened by the post office Dept.
How is the mail coming then? How about your work - keep you busy? How many times have you played Golf? Do any good? Do you hear from Pudge? Did I tell you about my telephone Bill? $32.95. One to San Francisco 8.95, one to San Diego 6.85, but it was worth it to us and it is one big phone bill I cheerfully [underlined] paid.
We had a big snow here Now 28th and it is still with us and still cold as heck - burn lots of uncle Bills coal to keep warm.
As a courtesy for past favors you might drop a note to Dr Prout wishing him a successful basket ball season and
[unsure br]
2- [centered]
telling him you would be glad to recruit a few students for BGU from your location, but of course they would be of the "dusky hue" which probably would be of interest to Dean Conklin and Will [unsure leg] Donahey. I [underlined] know [underlined] it would please the old Boy immensely. Take time out and do it, son. T'would be a good investment.
Remember Tom Adams - head of District I of the highway dept? He has been accepted as a captain in the Engineers. He said he was in Paul Laudis' office and Pual was telling him about the fine letter he had from you. The letter to Paul was one of those "photoed" kind. Why are some like that and others not? All your letter to us except the very first have been just regular letters.
At a regular meeting of Ohio Conference officials BGU asked that all schools play "transfer students" and any body, I guess. It was voted down, so BGU withdrew from the Conference - not in anger at all but they (BGU) had considered it for some time.
John Halleck, ex [unsure sp] medical student, leaves Dec 15th for New London Conn - The Coast Guard.
Freddy Whitman [unsure sp] finished Dec 17th I think.
Our [underlined] Bill [underlined] should get his "wings" this coming Saturday Dec 12th.
Rubrake has been sent to Camp Lee VA, a quartermaster outfit.
Awful cold last night - 2 above zero. How would you like that?
[unsure br]
Shirley is bu[illegible] filling our [unsure leg] forms - she wants to work in some store during the holidays. I guess her romance with Glenn has blown up. She has refused him [unsure sp] dates lately and seems not to worry about it, which is good.
Wonder if Bill and the other West Point boys will get to be 1st Lieuts. when they get their wings?
Sally says you are due for a "trist" on January 4th. That right? Don't let them forget the date.
Of course, sonny boym you understand I don't care qhat your rank - just want the mess over and you boys back home - or somewhere near.
So cold today that there is no business, at least, not this morning. Very unusual to have it so cold and snow last so long, this time of year.
Say did you ever get your xmas box from the High School Girls?
Don't [underlined x2] forget to write a swell thank you letter. Letters are coming in from abroad.
Well, Richard, old Pal - I will get this in the mail to you.
Do your very best in whatever you are assigned to do. Be alert [underlined] and snappy [underlined]. Remember (always) your prayers. Answer as many questions as you can, and be your Pop's good boy. I love you. X
