(Letter #7) [top right] Wednesday Dec 2-42 [end top right]
Dear Old Son and Pal-
I've kind of neglected you for a few days, but I have been busy - entertaining Sally. Shirley + I met her at Deshler Sunday at 4:00 p.m. and when we got back home, mom had a big Turky + Dressing dinner, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and lemon pie- boy was it only good and Sally was [unsure leg], too. Dont it make your mouh water to have me tell you about it? We all stuffed ourselves and went to bed rather early. Monday night I took home 4 steaks ($3.60) and we had broild steaks baked potatoes, cabbage slaw + pumpkin pie but none of us could eat the pie - we were so full. What steaks! Mouth water, again? Last night mom was serving a Eastern sar so Shirley Sally + I went to Harveys to eat. Sally worked at Gas Rationing Board yesterday + today - she wante to. Today we had a financial settlement - I sent a check as payment on your uniform and and Sally paid your insurance $24.35.
And Cold! Say, fellow, it is 10 above zero this a.m., what do you think of that?
Sally thinks she must go home this Saturday and I supposed she should. We calld her mother Sunday evening, cause I wanted them to know she was here safely.
Big Flash! Herb Bowman just phoned me and wanted to know if Sally would teach for him if Paul Scheid had to go to war?? Paul is ordered to Detroit December 11 and if he is accepted, Sally could have his job teaching English. How is that? Bowman is to see Sally about it this afternoon. I phoned Sally to tip her off on what was in the wind and now says she is thrilled no end - but she is afraid she isn't good enough to teach in BG High School - I said, of course she is, hells bells!
[unsure br] Wouldn't that be something ig Sally could stay wih us and teach in Senior High? Now don't accuse me of having the Draft Board take Scheid so Sally could have a job and stay with us. I "aint" that bad.
Thursday [centered]
The Youngs came over to call on Sally and us last night - stayed ill 1:00 a.m. Mrs Young said to mom, -"Bill Rothe's girl is alright but [underlined x2] Bill + Dick Gernert got the cream of the crop".
About 6 above zero this morning - Sally wonders why any body lives where it gets so cold. That old California loyaly creeping out. Well Sonny Boy, I'll shoot this into the mail. Tell me all you can but be an officer in every sense of the word, first. How did your golf game come out?
Remember your prayers. I love you so much.
Pop [bottom right]
p.p. Lt Mustain and wife are here on a furlough - He can hardly wait till this is over and you + he + Bill can get together again. Pop. | |
