July 20, 1918 Sat. night Geh Ling Liu, Peters Park Miss Grace K. McClurg Dear friend: I received your romanice letter about a month ago. I thought I shall reply it at once, but I haven't got time and almost Sunday is my letter day. On the other hand I do not know your adress exactly. Think I am lazy and impolite; don’t you? Monday morning I just got through my breakfast and the postman came, “Who is G.L. Lau?” He cried up. “Yes, sir; I am” answer I and awfully surprised where does the thing come for one thought maybe Mr. Carson sent me. But after I saw your name on the wrapping paper then I knew it sent from you. No wondering I wish to see what is in inside as I opened it quickly. Oh! Y! There were 20 sister handkerchiefs, 18 brother neckties, two cusin kerchiefs, a couple friend stockings and pencils, and two parents trousers and sleeping clothe. Thanks for your kindness and those things. I am very glad that every things which you sent me are fine and just fit to me. And I am so glad that since now on I can have a sleeping clothe instead my Chinese clothing. Day before yesterday again I got a letter from you. Now, I know those things rot all mine but nging hoi too. Therefore we shall divided tomorrow night anyway. (He went to village to preaching. He will be back until Monday.) Well, you know I am awfully busy; Beside my school I do work for the money for living. – am too That I work hard and get more money for next fall. Oh! Yes, I paid the summer school's tuition by myself. Therefore these few weeks my pocket was awfully dry; and as it was so thirsty for taste the money! Well - Since my condition was so poor but you don't imagine I am a beggar or still a “Geh Leng.” But I tell you I still a “Geh Leng” and a strong as enough to kill the Kaiser. Say, Miss McClurg: I just past my examination yesterday; But I don't know my credit is hot or cold. But I do know I have done my duty all night; then of it were fall (fault), I think it isn't my fault, perhaps the book’s fall. Well - Do you know my nephew Geh Keong’s sun was dead? Yes, he has been called by God about 4 months ago. For his sake, my heart has been broken off - and do not know what does God's meaning; “thou hast gave to us, why those hast depended from us?” And I also very grieve for the deaths of your uncle. We pray God’s blessing comes to us pretty soon or at once. Few days ago, also I got a new paper from China, that the political factions of North and South China wouldn't be compromised, and the outcome of Jap was troubled upon China. (Make 20 demands upon China) This disturbance is dark and bad. We ask God that the storm be soon settled and China will be a strong world power as Chinese sister country you America. Hoping this will find you happy and well. Very sincerely yours, Geh Ling Liu |
