Evanston, May 13 ’11. My dear Brother: Lest you forget what my handwriting looks like, I will give you a sample, and it will be short. This is the seventh letter today. Worked hard today until one, for at that hour we had the junior luncheon for the seniors. Expected to have the whole afternoon at it,but was free at 3:30. Didn't feel like studying, but was at a white heat for letters, and wrote. Want tomorrow free for anything I please. One of the letters is to the Laffertys. There is little to write about this week. Had a nice visit with Alice Wed. at C.T.S. Enjoyed that more than the meeting with the old girls, for none of those whom I cared most about were there. Went to the fete this evening but will spend the 25cents for something else next time. The crowning of the May queen was very pretty. So was the Maypole dance, what there was of it. Not nearly so intricate nor pretty as our dance at C.T.S. on class day. After that there were several fancy marches with the couples finally going off waltzing. Only girls present. I hate to be a wall-flower, but stood around and tried to be as gay as I could when I was dull and tired. As no one was ready to calm, I had to “stick around.” A bunch came as soon as the cream was served, and here I am writing. The rest will be making a noise for some time yet, so I might as well write. Our luncheon was a great success. I had to print the menu on the back of some hand-painted cards, and will give you a sample Fruit Concoction Potato au Gratin Sherbet Creamed Chicken Olives Rolls Salmon Salad Wafers Ice Cream Macaroons Coffee Nuts The invitations had been sent out on padlocks, and the place cards each carried a desolate looking man in crossbars, chained to two heavy iron balls. Instead of toasts, there was a jury trial to accuse the seniors of breaking the peace of N.U. Lots of fun. Found guilty. The girls are getting home now. Ed, the “Barb” Union entertains the “barb” women Mon. Night. Expect to go. Papa, was very glad, to get your letter this a.m. Do it some more. Mamma, I got out that embroidered linen waist this week and fixed the sleeves so that I can wear it. A “modern job.” Won't spare inspection but looks well. Whacked the full flowing bottoms off at the seam, hemmed the length, instead of putting on cuffs, and have quite modern sleeves. That and the old 3 decker white lawn skirt will help me look nice the rest of the year, tho they are both rotten enough to tear at a look almost. Have gotten out that dotted Princess with the blue stripes. Everyone seems to like it. May add a little tomorrow. This is all now. Good night. Love from Grace. |
