Letter from Kuo H. Chang to Grace McClurg, June 10, 1925

Dear Miss McClurg + Apple -
There are about one hundred and ninety bands, including all classes men, joint the “roaming” (in-ga) in this day and the persons in more than ten thousands. All shops in Foochow still close and communication is all stopped in this day. We heard that the labours of steamer will begin to strike within two or three day. The electric factory, Foochow, will begin to strike also on Friday. The student association heard this news sent delegates to ask them not to strike or as soon as the electric factory strike. Foochow will be the dark world and many dangerous will appear. Chinese movement in those days is for the purpose to show our sympathy to Shanghai affair and only to call the people begin to boycott the Japanese and English goods.
Sorry to say, there are some members of anti-religion + anti-Church school among the students, so we always see there are many anti-Church school notic [notice] on the wall. As we saw those notic [notice] we were very angry and we now sent some delegates to Fukien Student Association to ask them announce through over all government school do not write such impolite notic [notice] again and brush of or abolish away those notic [notice], for the affair happened in Shanghai did not relate to America, and though we are the student of Church school we sympathy to the seven event happened in Shanghai and join with them in doing some important works.
The actions of anti-Church school arise so severe in Foochow is because the students of Church school, as Hina-Naing and other schools, did not show their sympathy to the accidents happened to our nation in those years.
According to my opinion the students of Church schools should do their duty to our nation – some times work together with government students, otherwise the student of Church school will be opposited more severe than before.
The students of government school is nearly as mad men. One very important duty of the students of our university is to reform the Fukien Student Association. So we sent for students as of our (?) to co-operate with them and to guide them to walk on the right road. Moreover, we hope that those four students can make better the friendship between government students and Church students.
Please not write me within this week if you do write me, you may sent your letter to Fukien Christian University.
