Letter from John Shawhan (Morrow, Ohio) to William and Mary Phillips, July 10, 1858

Morrow Ohio July 10^th 1858

To Wm and Mary Phillips

Dear Children,

I rec’d your letter dated 3 July on the 10^th of the same month and was glad to hear from all but sorry to learn that Mary was affected.  The reason why I did not write sooner Polly had a hard spell of sickness and I wanted to know how it would terminate.  She has recovered her health again and is about.  I was very un well for 6 weeks my self so as not to be able to do any work but have recovered again so as to attend to before again there was a good deal of sickness in our neighborhood the fore hand of the season we supposed and account of the wet wether I need not give (illegible) the wet wether for I suppose (illegible) us as it is as with you (illegible)

Rest of the claims that I thought could be collected with cost except David Hicks and John Blise.  Hicks says he would pay but in 20 days his time is up and I could to see him but he was not at home.  Clive (illegible) says he can turn the claims against him with that parres (illegible) their claims is not on the Tillagrapht wire yet all the cash (illegible) I put in suit as fast as they become dur I amitted on the first page to state that I got that $10.00 from Zale which I did do has got back to morrow and is married and is carrening on butchering a opposition them two Dutch has left and gon to Wilmington morrow stills hold its own (illegible) clear of their finer the two lasts (illegible) suppose will cost our County (illegible)

Come on the Bottoms and valley of lands looks very well up to these dates had on the flat land.  It don’t look at tall many on the flats did not (illegible) on till the last of June and wear them under water.  You wished me to let you know the truth about Nancy Hutchinson.  She and Frederick is both dead and the rest of the heirs has sold the old place to Andrew Cadwallder for $75 per acre so that he may look upon Morrow town as the devil did when he took Christ up on the mountain.  That claim you hold (illegible) had better make it (illegible) sign your name how (illegible)

But (illegible) has not found any vacant spot yet so write to me if you can hatch up any more nonsense then I have let us have it.  Now I am through only I want you to give my best respect together with my wife to my old esteemed friend Mr. Kepler and a (illegible) and I feel in hopes that I may be their next fall to shake hands with you all.
