GENERAL STRIKE CIRCULAR This Spring is the time, for all of us, regardless of our affiliation, to work together on concrete demands and constructive projects. Some of us have decided to try for a general strike for these reasons: 1) to prevent events from escaping the control of the students here, 2) The Weathermen have been and may be here; 33), we as students still have our problems with the campus, local, state, and national administerations, and 4) if we can manage a successful open school strike we may be able to get some positive changes. The strike if initiated will be on the basis of the ten demands listed below. The first five demands have been made previously ( la-le) but we include them in the interests of successful, co-operative and unified action. DEMANDS 1a. No military recruiters on campus 1b. A University statement made confirming university community's opposition to the Indo-China War 1c. Campus security personell should not carry guns 1d. Denunciation of House Bill 1219 1e. The foundation of a Peace STUDIES Instute 2, Students as a voting and integral paet of al bodies which determine hiring, firing, salary and tenure questions 3. ditto 2 for student housing, codes, regulations, academic matters, and for student body organization 4. Abolition of token student representation in favor of participatory forms of representation 5. A meal policy based on fair food prices and consumption 6. Total university community co-operation (student-faculty-administration) on ecological and political projects with as little ambiguity and as much fixed, defined responsibility as possible 7. Individualized and functional programs of study considering or crediting student and faculty work and activities 8. Redefinition of the mission and limitations of campus security 9. Student voting rights in university financial matters 10. Negotiations must be meaningful, open-minded, public and all pertinent information must be made available Note: MEANINGFUL response requested by Wednesday, May 5, 10 am should this prove fruitless we urge a general strike by all students regardless of their affilliations. We feel that a general strike should take place due to enlightened self interest: get this or some other constructive project together or someone else will get what they want together. signed: Remains of Student Union Some Thursday night people plus |
