I am saddened by the shootings at Kent State. I also can see, that after the strain that was put upon those boys in the National Guard, such a thing could and did happen. Why expect the boys in the National Guard (who are human) to have any more control than the college rioters? I do not commend them, but I do not condemn them. There has to be a limit set for these young people. As a parent I shall do my utmost to help you. As the President of Bowling Green, I expect you to do the same for my son and all the students at Bowling Green who are there for an education. Sincerely yours, Mary Barnes cc: Governor Rhodes President Nixon P.S. I read this letter to my son, and he agrees that I am right in sending it; however, he has requested that if the contents of this letter should be made public that my name nor his should be used. I have agreed to this. |
