Space Travel in Popular Culture
Introduction
Prepared by the Browne Popular Culture Library for the 60th Anniversary of the first manned space flights; the first being aboard the Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961, piloted by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, and the second being aboard the Freedom 7 Spacecraft piloted by NASA astronaut Alan Shepard on May 5, 1961. This exhibit explores the theme of space travel in popular culture, both as science fiction and actual, as represented in the Browne Popular Culture collection.
