The Chiefs Wahoo

Items related to Big Chief Wahoo (cartoon character) and Chief Wahoo (Cleveland Indians mascot). Circa 1940s.

Big Chief Wahoo premiered as a comic strip in 1935, the product of writer Allen Saunders and artist and Toledo native Elmer Woggon. Wahoo’s features were an exaggerated caricature and his dialogue was always a stilted Pidgin English. In 1946, the Cleveland Indians adopted their own Chief Wahoo character, which remains in use today.
