"Playing Indian"- Whitewashing and redface
Casting white actors as Native has always been a common practice, and continued even as sympathy for the plight of Native peoples grew in the late 1960s and 1970s. Cher used her exotic (but non-Native) looks to effect with the song “Half Breed”, and the doll seen here certainly plays up that image. In East Germany, “Easterns” such as those starring Serbian actor Gojko Mitic inverted the tropes of the Western genre to make Native people the heroes, but used entirely White European casts.
