Campus Publicity

Baldwin first visited BGSU in 1977 to deliver a pubic lecture, titled "The Role of a Student in Society."

He served the campus as the Distinguished Visiting Faculty in Fall 1979, which much of Dr. Ernest Champion's text, Mr. Baldwin, I Presume: James Baldwin-Chinua Achebe, A Meeting of the Minds, documents.  In Dr. Champion's account, Baldwin's first words to his students were "Good morning, I am Jimmy Baldwin."

In May 1980, Baldwin was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in the Humane Letters from BGSU President Hollis A. Moore.
