Description | First built in 1904 at the northwest corner of Thurstin and Wooster, Ivy Hall--named for the vines that covered its exterior walls--predated the founding of the university. Prior to being purchased by BGSU in 1947, the building served a variety of purposes. It was originally built for shotgun manufacturer Lefevere Arms Company and later housed undergarment manufacturer Monarch Woolen Works, followed by the Universal Machine Company. From 1926 until its purchase by the university the building was used as a chicken hatchery. Though it was intended to be used as a warehouse after being acquired, the need for housing in the economic and education boom of post-WWII America resulted in Ivy Hall being used as a dormitory space. Beginning in 1948, several fraternities called Ivy Hall home until it was remodeled to house women in 1952. The last occupant was Delta Upsilon Fraternity when the building was condemned in 1961 and demolished in 1962. |
