Vadae G. Meekison Collection (MS 211)

The year is 1912. Will Ohio become one of the first states in the nation to enfranchise women? Vadae Meekison hopes so, organizing pro-suffrage support throughout Henry County in coordination with Ohio Woman Suffrage Association President Harriet Taylor Upton. Ballot measures in 1912 and 1914 put the issue in front of Ohio’s male voters, and while support for an amendment to the state constitution was higher in Ohio than in other states, the effort failed and Ohio women had to wait until the passage of the 19th amendment. This small collection illuminates pro-suffrage campaign strategy on state, local, and individual levels.
