Highland Park Oct. 30, 1911. My dear Folks: Will not boast of the shortness of this letter, but do you not think that it will be more than this one sheet. I'm a bit tired so I'm going to go to bed with the chickens. It is 730 now. We'll try to remember in the morning to clip out “Dawson’s” weekly letter in today's Tribune. I like MacCutcheon’s cartoons better than his books. He is exerting a great influence through them. The washing today it took me just a little over three hours. Had 5 sheets and 2 bed spreads (thin like sheets) and should have had three more. Didn't boil a sheet and 3 of them didn't even get robbed. We are having company while he is away, and of course the beds have to be changed fresh for each newcomer. Mrs. Smith was here one night and I had to put on other sheets for the young woman who came next. It rather distressed me until I thought of folding up the others to keep until Mrs. S comes back, as she will end of the week. By the way, Mr. Edward Smith is being married just about now. Goes to Europe for a trip. Boston girl. Mrs. Smith and the other married daughter are at the wedding. Mr. Bullard reached San Fran. today. We have a New Girl here for a few days. Very pleasant. Mrs. B. and her other friend were invited out for dinner Sat. night and Sun. noon. Mrs. B. was gone Sat. noon also. Then the first of the week they were gone Tues. and Wed. noons and nights. I could not with a clear conscience take my Fri. off, besides was not eager to do so. Just as well, considering the time Sun. Got down to Evanston for morning service. Doctor Frost's sermon was just what I needed. Had dinner and supper at Pearsons with Hazel Perry. In the p.m. we went to “organ vespers” At the church. It was at twilight, and the subdued lights through the windows and the half gloom in the great auditorium and the hushed tones of the organ (once adding the most wonderful chimes) made one think of a cathedral. Just wait until you all come up in June, and you can hear too. Went to League, then home. The Union Volunteer Meeting is to be in the city Fri. Night. Want to go, if it is not too far out. Will go “shopping” in the p.m. Will most likely get Papa’s and Ed’s Xmas things then, and Ruth's whole list? Ruth, there is nothing modest about your desires, is there. But you have exceeded the $5 limit. Wish the rest would make out some lists. Mamma, I am not going in very much for things. Can't. But had some things planned this summer. A thin wooden box came the other day which will just fit what I want to send. Want to get everything that I have to get and pay out every obligation by Xmas and save everything after that for school. Will send the promised V for potatoes and apples. Mamma, keep the I of Mrs. McPh. To apply on the pump. Hope to hear from Pearl soon. Have been getting on fine with my sewing. Got the singer Fri. Just fine. About 2 ? or 3 lbs. Did a lot to my linen dress. Can soon finish it. Today I ripped a good deal on my yellow coat, lengthened skirt and sleeves, refit the front at waist hem, and cut a big shawl collar which will lay right over the other. We'll do it up next Mon. And that will be ready for spring. I'm going to spend a dollar or so to make my blue wool attractive. After that I will be ready to make: For commencement: 2 thin white shirtwaists Plain white duck shirt Fine white dress Fine white undershirt Some kind of lawn Lovingly, Grace. Uncle H came Tue. Guess I did write that. Please see about those films right away. Ed I shall be terribly disappointed if you didn't get any more of the babies. None of the films have been exposed yet, take for 4 of yourself, Ruth, and the folks, and send me the Kodak with the rest of the films in. I'm anxious for them. Don't bother to save any films if you need them to get the folks' pictures. Don't send the Kodak if the films are all used please! |
