|Title||Schooner Entering Harbor Under Full Sail, Charlotte, N.Y.|
|Description||This previously unpublished Webster & Albee stereo arrived last week. It shows a delightful summer view of two men strolling down the pier with three young children at Port Charlotte, New York on Lake Ontario. In the background is an unidentified two-masted scow schooner coming in under full canvas. The faint caption on the right panel reads “Schooner coming into Port Charlotte under full sail, Charlotte, NY.” One of the men is wearing a captain’s hat and may be the master of the schooner shown docked next to them.|
The schooner at the dock is the DAUNTLESS, built 1867 at Oakville, Ontario. This card represents the only known image of her, and this is also the only known example of this card. The DAUNTLESS today lies on the bottom of Lake Ontario in deep water off Thirty Mile Point. Not long after this photo set was taken, she was lost, nearly with all hands.
In October of 1895, she was bound from Charlotte, NY to Hamilton, ONT with coal when she sprang a leak and quickly went to the bottom. Her five crew barely had time to board the yawl, after which they drifted for some time, eventually being picked up off Port Hope by the schooner CLARA YOUELL. The DAUNTLESS likely lies in extremely deep water and has yet to be found.
There were several schooners DAUNTLESS on the Lakes, making the identity of the one in this image difficult to ascertain. Webster & Albee’s tenure at Rochester from 1886 to 1910 ruled out most. The 1867 Dauntless was the only one sailing on Lake Ontario, conveniently out of Port Charlotte at the time. She may have been lost soon after this view was made, as it seems to date from about 1890.
